Have you ever looked Jesus’ favorite topics? If you have, you’ve discovered that 16 of the 38 recorded parables of Jesus address the topic of money. In fact, Jesus had far more to say about money than he did heaven. So why is the subject of money avoided so often in church? That won’t be the case in September as I will be asking, “Is poverty spiritual?” I’ll be drawing on Dallas Willard’s The Spirit of the Disciplines [Harper Collins © 1988, available at Christianbooks.com and Amazon.com]. I’ll be preaching several sermons on the subject; my sermon texts include, in no particular order, Matthew 6:19-34; Mark 10:17-31; Luke 12:13-21; Luke 18:18-20 and 1 Timothy 6:6-10, 17-19.
Lay liturgists are asked to read Mark 7:24-37 on September 9; Mark 8:27-38 on September 16; Mark 9:30-37 on September 23 and Mark 9:38-50.
Beginning on Sunday, September 2, our psalter will be drawn from Psalm 45, then Psalm 125, Psalm 19, Psalm 1 and we wrap the month up with Psalm 124.
Each week, the New Testament reading is from the Book of James; I encourage you to read it this month.
I’ll see you in church
